From inclusive neoliberalism to authoritarian populism : A talk by Prof. Alf Nilsen

From inclusive neoliberalism to authoritarian populism : A talk by Prof. Alf Nilsen

How Neoliberalism could be inclusive at all? Why the features of current regime doesn’t classify it to be a case of Fascism rathwer than qualifying it as “Authoritarian Populism?” What are the major differences in the UPA and NDA governements, how Indian polity has changed since 2004 and what are the prospects for a pro people political regime in 2019?

All these questions were addressed and discussed during a thought provoking and engaging talk by Alf Nilsen in SIS, JNU today. The theme of the talk was “From inclusive neoliberalism to authoritarian populism: Trajectories of change in world’s largest democracy (India from 2004 to 2019). Alf presented an analysis of how the UPA and the Modi regime have negotiated the contradictions of neoliberal capitalism to build hegemony. He also reflected on how the right-based legislations introduced under UPA can be turned into a vehicle of counter hegemonic struggle.

This was done on a very short notice but was made successful by all comrades in JNU . Prof. Subodh Malakar chaired the session. Prof. Ajay Patnaik made the opening remarks. I introduced Alf and Dr. Rupinder Kaur commented upon Alf’s deliberation. Ritu Jha, Meenakshi Sundriyal, Jayant Jigyasu, Suresh, and many others whose names I don’t know made the discussion very interesting. The meeting was a success and for that I thank on behalf of Joshi-Adhikari Institute to Prof. Alf Nilsen, Prof. Subodh Malakar, Prof. Ajay Patnaik, Prof. Meenakshi Sundriyal, Amrita Pathak, Sonam Maurya, Aparajitha Raja, Satyabhama RajoriaShivangi SharmaAkshay Kharbanda, , Rajneesh SahilSonam Jha who spared their time and invited others and all those who attended the talk, and also thanks to them who couldn’t come but passed the word like Shweta Tripathi, Padam Kumar, RahilaRadhika MenonNiranjan Kumar MistriFauzan Abrar and many others.
